Finding a gentler rhythm of thankfulness during a busy season.
When Thankfulness Becomes Another To-Do
November has arrived, bringing with it the familiar reminders to be grateful, count our blessings, and appreciate all that we have. It's a beautiful sentiment, but isn't it interesting that the season devoted to thankfulness can also be one of the most overwhelming times of the year?
With 7 Saturdays left before Christmas, the holiday preparations have begun, calendars are filling up, family gatherings need planning, and our everyday responsibilities don't magically disappear. Somewhere between the planning, prepping, grocery lists, decorations, and expectations, we're also supposed to find time to slow down, reflect, and feel grateful. Even gratitude can start to feel like another thing on our to-do list.
A Slower Season of Thankfulness
Perhaps the answer isn't to make more room in our schedules for gratitude, but to give gratitude a little more breathing room.
We often hear that creating a daily habit is the best way to make something meaningful. But during an already busy season, even the simplest daily practice can begin to feel like another commitment we're struggling to keep.
What if we approached this month differently?
Instead of asking ourselves to reflect every day, we could set aside a few quiet moments once a week. Just four opportunities throughout the month to step away from the noise, gather our thoughts, and reconnect with what truly matters.
One week might bring appreciation for the people who support us. Another might invite us to recognize our own strength or find comfort in the familiar parts of our lives.
There is no need to force a particular feeling or search for something profound. Some reflections may come easily, while others might take a little more thought. Both are perfectly fine.
And if a week slips by without a moment to pause? There is nothing to make up and no reason to feel guilty.
After all, gratitude is meant to enrich our lives, not become another expectation we place upon ourselves.
A Gentle Weekly Pause
Find a comfortable place, perhaps with a warm cup of tea or coffee, and spend a few minutes considering one simple question. You might write a few sentences in your journal, jot down a handful of thoughts, or simply sit with whatever comes to mind.
To help guide your reflections, here are four gentle invitations for the weeks ahead:
Week One: Finding Your Footing
What is something in your life that brings you comfort, stability, or a sense of peace?
Week Two: The Gift of Connection
Who has made your life a little lighter lately, and what do you appreciate about their presence?
Week Three: Giving Yourself Grace
What is something you've handled, overcome, or simply made it through that deserves a little appreciation?
Week Four: Carrying Gratitude Forward
What would you like to appreciate more in the coming season?
These reflections aren't meant to be completed on a particular day or answered in any particular way. They're simply invitations to pause whenever the moment feels right.
You may discover that a few thoughtful minutes each week are all you need to make gratitude feel less like an obligation and more like a meaningful part of your life.
